Synology NAS Data Recovery

Your Synology array failed. Your data does not have to.

DSM crashes, dropped drives and failed SHR rebuilds do not mean the data is gone. We reconstruct RAID and SHR arrays and recover Btrfs/EXT4 volumes from every Synology DiskStation, RackStation and FlashStation model — in-house, in Belfast.

I.

The problem

When a Synology NAS stops mounting, everything on it is at risk.

A degraded volume, a failed firmware update or a second drive dropout can take an entire array offline in one step.

  • RAID/SHR failure — multiple drive dropouts, degraded or crashed arrays across RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, SHR and SHR-2
  • Corrupted volumes — Btrfs or EXT4 file systems that will not mount after a crash, power loss or failed DSM update
  • Locked disks — drives held by Synology's proprietary array rules after a rebuild goes wrong
  • Physical damage — damaged enclosures, controller boards or drives inside the unit
  • Deletion — deleted or overwritten shares and project files

If your NAS is degraded, stop rebuilding it yourself. A second manual rebuild attempt is the most common way an array becomes unrecoverable. Power the unit down and speak to us before you try anything further.

Coverage

Every Synology range, current and legacy.

i

DiskStation (desktop)

Current and legacy DS series — DS925+, DS1525+, DS1825+, DS220+, DS920+, DS1821+, DS1019+, DS2419+ and older models.

ii

RackStation (rackmount)

RS series enterprise units — RS1221+, RS3621xs+, RS4021xs+, RS2821RP+, RS3617xs and other rack-mounted arrays.

iii

FlashStation & expansion

FS series all-flash units and DX/RX expansion enclosures, including mixed-drive and expanded arrays.

iv

Not sure of the model?

We can identify it from a photo or serial number as part of intake — you do not need to know the exact model to get started.

Process

Diagnosis first, fixed quote before any work begins.

  1. 01

    Diagnosis

Every disk from the array is imaged sector-by-sector. We diagnose the real fault — RAID/SHR failure, file system corruption or physical damage — and report back plainly.

  2. 02

    Fixed quote

You approve a fixed price based on the actual fault before any recovery work begins. No surprises once work is under way.

  3. 03

    Array reconstruction

RAID or SHR is logically reconstructed from the disk images, and the Btrfs or EXT4 volume is rebuilt without altering your original drives.

  4. 04

    Verified return

A sample directory listing is shown for your approval before final extraction. Recovered files are returned on new, encrypted media.

Why choose us

A specialist lab, not a general IT shop.

Synology arrays are used for the work that matters most — production archives, client projects, business records. We treat them accordingly:

  • In-house recovery — every case is worked at our Belfast laboratory under one chain of custody, never outsourced
  • RAID/SHR specialists — full reconstruction across RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, SHR and SHR-2, including mixed-drive arrays
  • Fixed quotes — you know the exact cost before any recovery work begins
  • Fast turnaround options — priority services available where deadlines are critical

This service sits within our wider NAS data recovery work, alongside RAID array recovery and server recovery for business-critical storage.

Questions

The honest answers.

My Synology volume shows as "crashed" or "degraded" in DSM. Is the data gone?

Usually not. A crashed or degraded status means DSM cannot safely mount the array — it does not mean the data on the disks is destroyed. The safest step is to power the unit down and stop any rebuild attempts until it has been diagnosed.

A second drive failed during a RAID/SHR rebuild. What now?

Stop immediately. Continuing a rebuild with a second failed or failing drive is one of the most common causes of permanent data loss on NAS arrays. Power the unit off and send us the disks in the state they are in.

Do you recover Btrfs and EXT4 file systems?

Yes — both are standard Synology volume formats and a core part of our NAS recovery work, including cases involving snapshot and DSM-specific metadata.

Can you work from just the drives, without the NAS enclosure?

In most cases, yes. Send the disks in the order and orientation they were removed where possible, along with the NAS model or serial number if known.

Do you offer a free diagnosis?

No. Synology RAID and SHR recovery requires specialist tooling and engineer time, so diagnosis is a paid, fixed-cost step — but you always see and approve that cost before any recovery work begins.
