Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB clicking sounds.
Today we got posted to us a Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green Hard Drive for Data Recovery from Germany. The Western Digital Hard Drive made clicking sounds and was not recognized at all. We were advised that the hard drive was dropped before it stopped working. As soon as the drive was plugged into our DeepSpar DDI 4 imager you could hear the clicking sounds and we stopped right away to prevent further damage to the magnetic plates.
The Western Digital 1.5 TB Caviar Green was taken apart for further investigation to find out how bad the heads are and if there would be any scratches on the plate from dropping it. Under the microscope in our clean room the heads looked fair but you never know until you tried a different set of heads from a donor but at least no damage or scratches on the plate. That increases the chances of a Data Recovery job. If there would be scratches, specially near the outside it can be quite challenging to get any data off. But here we were quite lucky and new heads from a donor drive worked perfectly fine. Now we can start to image the drive to recover any data from it. WD Hard Drives are quite common and we have a huge stock of donor drives to allow for a fast-professional data recovery job in the UK. There were a couple bad sectors from accidental dropping it but nothing our tools couldn’t handle. The total data recovery was well over 99% success with no actual data loss to the customers.
