A Toshiba RD88DT recorder's hard drive, ten years and 65 family videos deep.
A 160GB Seagate hard drive out of a Toshiba RD88DT Freeview+ DVD recorder arrived at our Belfast laboratory completely failed, with a growing number of bad sectors. Around two hours of imaging later, all 65 home videos it held were recovered.
The case
A decade-old drive, failed completely.
The drive was a 160GB Seagate mechanism fitted inside a Toshiba RD88DT Freeview+ Hard Drive DVD Recorder — around ten years old, with a legacy IDE interface, and holding a family's home videos.
By the time it reached us, the drive had failed completely and was carrying a significant number of bad sectors. That is a normal, expected pattern on a mechanical drive of this age — but it also has a practical consequence: a drive in this state generally cannot be read in an ordinary external USB enclosure. It needs to go through a lab imaging process instead.
We see drives like this regularly, most often out of CCTV systems rather than DVD recorders — but electrically and mechanically, an ageing IDE hard drive behaves much the same wherever it came from. We keep the IDE interfaces and adapters needed to connect drives of this age in stock as a matter of course.
The recovery

With bad sectors present and the drive already failed, the priority was a controlled, low-risk read rather than a straightforward copy.

Diagnosis
The drive was connected via its IDE interface and assessed, confirming complete failure with a substantial number of bad sectors across the platters.

Sector-by-sector imaging
Our imaging equipment worked through the drive carefully around the damaged areas, producing a good clone. The full pass took around two hours.

Recovery from the image
The family's home videos were recovered from the clone, isolating each usable file rather than relying on the original, failing drive any further.
The result
65 home videos, recovered intact.
A total of 65 home videos were recovered from the drive. The customer, whose only copies of these family videos existed on this single failed drive, was very satisfied with the result.
It is a common pattern with DVD recorders and set-top DVRs: the hard drive inside is treated as part of the appliance, not as a backup-worthy store of irreplaceable footage. When that drive reaches the end of a normal ten-year mechanical lifespan, as this one had, it is the recorder that gets replaced — while the drive itself, and everything on it, still deserves a proper recovery attempt before being written off.
Whatever the age, brand or interface, get an honest recoverability view and fixed quote before any further work is attempted.
