Never heard of the brand? We still know the drive.
Not every SSD carries a Samsung or Crucial badge. Unbranded, OEM and discontinued drives fail just as often — usually with less support from the manufacturer. Our lab identifies the controller and NAND on sight and recovers accordingly.
The problem
No brand, no support, no clear path forward.
A large share of the SSDs we see every week carry no recognisable name at all.
Unbranded, OEM and rebranded SSDs turn up everywhere — prebuilt desktops, budget laptops, tablets, kiosks and embedded industrial systems. They fail the same way any SSD fails, but the owner is usually left with nowhere to turn: no manufacturer helpline, no known model number, no obvious next step.
We regularly recover:
- Consumer OEM brands — Patriot, TeamGroup, PNY, Mushkin, Transcend, Apacer, Silicon Power, Lexar, Netac, Goodram, Verbatim, Kingmax, Colorful and similar
- White-label / rebranded drives — supplied inside PCSpecialist, CyberPower, MSI, ASUS and other pre-built systems
- Discontinued brands — including OCZ and older JMicron-controller drives no longer supported by anyone
- Embedded and industrial SSDs — soldered storage in kiosks, control panels and machinery
Important: stop using the drive as soon as a fault appears. Do not run a firmware update, and do not let recovery software write to the drive — on SSDs this can permanently destroy recoverable data.
Failure patterns
Why generic SSDs fail more, and fail harder.
Budget and OEM drives often use DRAM-less designs and lower-cost controllers, with less monitoring built in — so failures tend to arrive with no warning.
Not recognised at all
The drive is invisible to BIOS and operating system, or reports as 0GB / a generic controller string.
"RAW" or reformat prompts
Windows asks to format the volume — a sign of file-system or mapping-table corruption, not necessarily lost data.
Controller freeze or read-only
The drive mounts but locks into a read-only or frozen state, often after a failed firmware update.
Bricked after an update
A firmware flash intended to fix one issue leaves the controller unresponsive entirely.
Why this is a specialist job
Undocumented firmware needs a real lab, not a download.
Generic SSDs typically run Phison, Silicon Motion, Maxiotek, Realtek or Innogrit controllers on firmware builds that are never publicly documented. Consumer recovery software cannot read them safely — and DIY attempts commonly push the controller into a worse, frozen state.

Identification
We identify the drive from controller chip markings, PCB layout and NAND architecture — no model number needed.

Diagnosis
Safe-read, non-destructive testing establishes exactly what has failed: controller, firmware, NAND or logical structure.

Hardware-level access
Where required, we bypass the controller and read the NAND directly, including chip-off extraction and firmware emulation for undocumented variants.

Reconstruction & verified return
The file system is rebuilt or individual files recovered, verified as openable, and returned on encrypted media.

I don't know the brand of my SSD. Does that matter?
Not for diagnosis. We identify drives from the controller chip, PCB layout and NAND architecture rather than relying on a printed brand name — many of the SSDs we recover have no clear branding at all.
Can a "bricked" SSD after a firmware update still be recovered?
Often, yes. A failed flash usually leaves the controller unresponsive rather than destroying the NAND itself. We assess whether firmware emulation or a chip-off read is the right route before quoting.
My SSD asks me to format it — will I lose everything if I say no?
Declining to format does not lose data by itself, but do not click through it either. Power the drive down and send it to us — a RAW or "please format" prompt is frequently recoverable at the file-system level.
Is a no-name or OEM SSD harder to recover than a Samsung or Crucial?
Sometimes, because the firmware is undocumented and proprietary. That is exactly why this is a specialist lab task rather than something recovery software can handle — but it does not make the case unrecoverable.
What if the SSD is soldered into an industrial or embedded system?
Send the whole board or unit where possible. We handle embedded and BGA-based storage in kiosks, control panels and industrial machinery as part of our soldered-SSD work.
