Case Study — USB Flash Drive Recovery

A USB connector was torn away. The data wasn't.

A teacher's SanDisk 8GB USB stick was still plugged in when the laptop it was connected to was dropped, ripping the connector half through the circuit board. The memory chip and controller underneath were untouched — and a direct-wire repair had the data back the next day.

I.

The situation

A drop, not a fault.

This was a physical accident rather than a failing drive — but that distinction only matters once you know what's underneath the casing.

The USB stick was plugged into a laptop when the laptop was dropped. The impact wrenched the connector, half tearing it away from the drive's circuit board. Its owner, a teacher, needed the data on it back as soon as possible.

Once the outer casing was removed, the damage was clear: the connector was hanging by a thread, physically ripped from the board. The good news was underneath it — the memory chip and the controller, the two components that actually hold and manage the data, showed no damage at all.

Diagnosis

The connector was gone. The chip wasn't.

With the memory and controller intact, this was a repair-and-bypass job rather than a chip-off recovery — in principle more straightforward, but this particular stick made it harder than usual. It had no direct solder points to reconnect to, only copper pads, and those pads were too badly damaged by the impact to use.

Without solder points or usable pads, there was no direct route back onto the board. The stick's circuit had to be mapped out by hand before any repair could even be attempted.

III.

Recovery

    With no solder points and no usable pads, the stick's internal circuit had to be traced and mapped before any physical work could start.

    Connector bypassed under microscope

    A handful of fine wires were run directly to the controller under a microscope, with the original connector temporarily held in place to complete the circuit.

    Full access restored

    The bypass gave full access to the drive after around an hour of work.

    Data copied off

    The fault was purely physical, so the transfer itself carried little risk. The full contents were copied across to our server in around 10 minutes.

IV.

Outcome

Back before lunchtime the next day.

The SanDisk stick was dropped off on a Friday evening. All of its data was recovered and ready before lunchtime on Saturday, for under £150. The customer received a follow-up call and was pleased with both the speed of the turnaround and the cost.
