An Iomega drive, clicking and undetected. All the data came back in under three hours.
A 1TB Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 — the mechanism with the industry nickname "12 clicks of death" — inside a failed Iomega external enclosure, clicking and no longer recognised by an Apple iMac or MacBook.
Background
Stopped working on both an iMac and a MacBook.
The customer had used the same Iomega external drive on two Apple machines, and it had failed on both.
The drive had stopped working on the customer's Apple iMac, then again on a MacBook. Connected over USB, it made an audible clicking sound and neither machine would mount it.
We opened the Iomega enclosure to access the drive itself, taking the USB bridge board out of the picture. Inside was a 1TB Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 — a mechanism with a well-earned nickname in the data recovery trade, "12 clicks of death," for how often that click is the first sign of trouble. The same drive family also turns up inside LaCie enclosures.
Diagnosis
What a click actually means.
Clicking is a symptom, not a diagnosis — it can point to three different faults.
A clicking hard drive is usually one of three things: bad sectors that cause the drive to repeatedly retry a bad read while the operating system freezes waiting for it; damaged read/write heads striking the platter; or a malfunctioning mainboard firmware. A firmware fault behaves a little like a car key fob the car has suddenly stopped recognising — the electronics are intact, but the drive and the computer can no longer talk to each other properly.
On testing, this particular drive's fault was bad sectors, built up over roughly 24,000 hours of runtime — a lot of use for a drive of this generation, and enough for weak sectors to accumulate and start throwing the drive into retry loops on every connection.

Enclosure removed
The Iomega case was opened and the Seagate BarraCuda 7200.12 accessed directly, ruling out the USB bridge board as the fault.

Fault confirmed
Testing identified bad sectors, not head or firmware failure, as the cause of the clicking and non-detection.

Specialist imaging
Purpose-built imaging tools worked around the damaged sectors, reading the drive without risking further wear on the media.

Copied to new media
All data was copied across to a new drive, with the transfer completed in under three hours.
Outcome
All data recovered, intact, in under three hours.
Despite the bad sectors and heavy prior use, the recovery was fast and complete.
The full contents of the drive were copied onto new media with everything intact — a straightforward result once the specific fault was identified and the right imaging approach used. The customer's data was handed back on the replacement drive, no longer dependent on a mechanism nearing 24,000 hours of runtime and a known weak spot in its generation.
