A dropped laptop, a clicking drive. The platters didn't survive.
A 1TB HGST 2.5" 5K1000 laptop drive arrived clicking after a one-metre drop. Here is what our cleanroom found — and why, honestly, this one couldn't be brought back.
The case
Dropped from a laptop, and clicking on arrival.
The drive: a Western Digital / HGST 2.5" 5K1000, 1TB, fitted in a laptop that was dropped from around one metre.
The laptop had been knocked to the floor, and the drive was clicking afterwards — the classic sign of a head or platter problem. It came to our Belfast laboratory for assessment before anything else was tried on it, which is exactly the right call with a clicking drive.
Clicking on its own does not mean a lost cause. Plenty of drives with this symptom are fully recoverable. The only way to know is to open it under proper cleanroom conditions and look.
Under the microscope
A deep scratch across the platter — and more beyond it.
Opened in the cleanroom, the drive showed a deep scratch running through the middle of the platter surface — visible without magnification. Under the microscope, further scratching showed up outside that central mark, including inside the platter's service area (SA), the region that stores the drive's own firmware and internal maps.
Scratches through the service area are about as bad as platter damage gets. Once the SA itself is physically gouged, the drive has no intact map to read the rest of the media by, and there is no way to rebuild that surface. Swapping the heads — our usual answer to a head-related click — would have made no difference here, because the fault was never the heads. It was the platter itself.
The result
An honest pass, not a guess.
We had to tell the client this one wasn't recoverable. Physical damage of this kind — scratched service area, scratched platter surface — cannot be worked around with donor parts or imaging tools; the data that lived on the damaged tracks is gone.
It is not the outcome we want on any job, but it is the honest one, and it is why every drive gets assessed properly before we say anything about what can or can't be done. A one-metre drop can just as easily leave a drive fully recoverable — it depends entirely on where the impact lands and what it touches inside.
