Case Study — Laptop Hard Drive

A dropped laptop, a clicking drive, and a dissertation due in two days.

A Dell Vostro laptop was dropped mid-dissertation, with no backup and a deadline two days away. By the time it reached our Belfast laboratory, a first repair attempt had already failed. Here is what we found, and how the data came back.

I.

The case

Dropped, clicking, and no backup.

A Dell Vostro laptop was accidentally dropped while its owner was working on a dissertation, with two days left before the deadline and no backup anywhere else.

After the drop, the drive began clicking — the classic sign of a mechanical head or platter fault, and usually a sign to stop using it immediately.

Understandably panicked, the customer took the laptop to a local computer repair shop first. The shop removed the drive and attempted a standard software-based data recovery. With a clicking drive, that approach had no chance of working, and it didn't: no data was recovered, and the drive was returned in worse condition than it arrived. Handing a clicking or mechanically failing drive to a general repair shop, rather than a specialist recovery lab, reduces the chances of getting the data back at all — every extra power-on risks further damage to the platter surface.

II.

Diagnosis

One good head, one damaged head.

The drive inside the Vostro was an HGST 500GB mechanism. On examination, it showed the clicking pattern typical of drop damage, and the customer was advised that a head replacement — a cleanroom procedure costing upwards of £300 — would likely be needed to get at the data.

Before committing to that, we always try the lower-cost, lower-risk options first. Using our DeepSpar imager — a hardware-based recovery tool built specifically for drives in this condition — we were able to gain access to the HGST mechanism without opening it.

The imaging revealed exactly what was wrong: the drive has two reading heads. Head 1 was reading cleanly at 70MB/s. Head 0 was unstable, fluctuating but managing a steady 10MB/s — consistent with a head that had either struck bad sectors or suffered direct damage in the fall.

III.

The recovery

Hardware imaging, not surgery.

    Assessment

    The drive was identified as an HGST 500GB mechanism with clicking consistent with drop damage. A head replacement was flagged as the likely worst case.

    Hardware-based imaging

    Before opening the drive, the DeepSpar imager was used to attempt low-level access — reading around the damaged head rather than through it.

  3. 03

    Per-head evaluation

    Imaging showed Head 1 performing normally and Head 0 degraded but still able to read, allowing data to be pulled without a cleanroom head swap.

  4. 04

    Data extraction

    The customer's files — mostly Desktop, Documents and Pictures — were copied off in full, roughly 32GB in total.

IV.

The result

The dissertation, and everything else, recovered.

All of the data the customer needed was extracted intact — without ever opening the hard drive. That meant no cleanroom head replacement, and a final cost of around £150 rather than the £300+ a physical repair would have required.

The dissertation was recovered in time for its deadline, along with the rest of the customer's files.
