The problem
Why these drives lose data.
Reliable mechanisms, but not immune to failure — the causes we see most often are:
- Physical mishandling — the most common cause on portable drives. A knock or drop in a bag is enough to damage the heads or platters.
- Accidental deletion or formatting — human error, without a backup to fall back on.
- Hardware failure — worn read/write heads, motor failure, or a faulty circuit board.
- Software corruption — viruses, malware or a software fault corrupting the file system and making the data inaccessible.
- Physical damage — drops, extreme temperature or moisture affecting the internal components.
- Power surges and other unforeseen events — flood, fire or electrical damage to the drive.
On a portable external, the USB enclosure and bridge board add a second failure point on top of the mechanism inside — a drive that isn't detected may be an enclosure fault rather than a damaged drive. Power it down and don't keep retrying the connection.

The drive and enclosure are examined and the fault identified — mechanism or bridge board. You get a clear, fixed quote before any recovery work starts.

Cleanroom repair or imaging
Physical faults are addressed in cleanroom conditions with donor parts where needed, then the drive is imaged sector by sector so nothing further is risked on the original media.

Logical reconstruction
File systems and folder structures are rebuilt from the image, recovering the documents, backups and media files the drive held.

Verified, secure return
Recovered files are verified as openable, then returned on a new encrypted drive or via encrypted transfer.
