Liquid-damaged and dead on arrival — the research data still came home.
A MacBook Pro 2020 (A2251) belonging to a Liverpool University PhD researcher wouldn't charge, power on, or show any sign of life. Apple's own store recommended replacing the affected parts — a fix that would have wiped the drive. Our Belfast laboratory took a different route: repair the board, not replace it.
The case
A dead MacBook, a PhD in the balance.
The MacBook Pro 2020 (A2251) belonged to a PhD student at Liverpool University, and it held research data with no other copy.
The laptop wouldn't charge, wouldn't power on, and gave no sign of life at all. A visit to the Apple Store produced a blunt verdict: the data wasn't recoverable through them, and the fix on offer — replacing the affected internals — meant starting again from a blank drive.
On this generation of MacBook Pro, that verdict carries extra weight. The SSD is soldered directly to the logic board and encrypted through the Apple T2 chip, so once the board is swapped out, whatever was on the drive goes with it.
With the university's authorisation, the MacBook was couriered to our Belfast laboratory overnight rather than handed back to Apple for a parts replacement.
Diagnosis
Liquid damage, not a dead drive.
Once the case was opened, the no-power fault turned out to be liquid damage rather than a failed SSD.
Even a small amount of liquid intrusion can take a modern MacBook completely dark, and this board showed the pattern clearly under inspection: damaged capacitors, a compromised SMC (the System Management Controller), and corrosion near the CD3217 controller chip that sits close to the T2-secured storage.
None of this pointed to the SSD itself being at fault. The storage and its T2 encryption were untouched — the problem was getting the board back to a state where it could power the drive at all.
The repair
Board-level repair, then a careful power-up.

Teardown & inspection
The MacBook was opened and the logic board inspected under magnification, tracing the liquid damage back to the affected capacitors, SMC and controller area.

Component-level repair
Damaged capacitors were replaced and the SMC circuit repaired using board-view schematics for this specific model — precision component work, not a parts swap.

Power restored, drive untouched
With the board repaired, the MacBook powered on for the first time since the damage — without ever removing or replacing the soldered, T2-encrypted SSD.

Data verified & backed up
The researcher's own password unlocked the drive. A full backup was taken and verified before the MacBook was returned.
The result
A full recovery, and a working laptop.
The MacBook came back to life in under 24 hours from arrival. Every file was recovered — the researcher's data was backed up in full, and the laptop itself was left in working order rather than reduced to a wiped replacement board.
The MacBook was couriered back to Liverpool University, invoiced on the institution's standard 30-day terms.
