The 10TB WD My Book and Elements range is built around the HGST Ultrastar He10 — a laser-welded, helium-sealed enterprise mechanism. A drop, a knock or a seized spindle usually looks worse than it is — the platters are often untouched.
The problem
A consumer case around an enterprise drive.
WD sells the My Book and Elements 10TB desktop drives in a plastic enclosure — but inside is genuine enterprise-grade mechanics, most commonly a re-badged HGST Ultrastar He10.
- Seized spindle motor. A knock or drop — especially while the drive is spinning — can seize the bearing outright. The drive will not spin up, or spins with a heavy, laboured drone.
- Head stack damage. Shock can knock the heads off their parking ramp and onto the platters, producing the clicking or buzzing sound users report.
- Firmware / ROM corruption. The drive spins but is not detected, or is detected under the wrong capacity or model name.
- Helium seal breach. These drives run sealed and pressurised with helium instead of air. Any breach of that seal — including a badly attempted DIY opening — degrades performance and can be fatal to the drive.
If yours was dropped, knocked, or is making a beeping or buzzing sound: power it off now, do not power-cycle it repeatedly "to see if it comes back", and do not run repair utilities.
A word of warning
This is not a drive to open on a workbench at home.
We regularly see these drives arrive after a well-intentioned home attempt — and the case for professional opening is stronger here than for almost any other drive.
- Laser-welded casing. The outer shell is sealed shut, not screwed. Cutting it open with a knife, pliers or a rotary tool risks metal shavings and dust landing directly on the platters underneath.
- Helium under pressure. There is a single fill/vent point sealed under a small sticker. Once breached, the helium — which the drive needs to run correctly — is gone for good.
- Eight platters, sixteen heads. The internal head stack assembly on a 10TB He10 is dense and unforgiving. A seized spindle motor typically means a full platter swap onto a matching donor mechanism, aligned and calibrated to micron tolerances.
- Contamination is invisible until it is fatal. A speck of dust that lands on a platter during a DIY opening may not fail the drive immediately — but it will during the recovery attempt that follows.
This work is done in our laboratory in a laminar flow cabinet, with the matching donor parts and tooling the He10 platform requires — not a garage bench. It is part of our wider hard drive data recovery service.

Is my WD My Book 10TB really the same as an HGST Ultrastar He10?
Very often, yes. WD owns HGST, and many 10TB My Book and Elements desktop drives are built around a re-badged Ultrastar He10 enterprise mechanism inside the consumer casing. The serials and internal layout usually confirm it.
The drive was dropped and now hums or buzzes. Is that fatal?
Not necessarily. A hum or buzz after a knock usually points to a seized spindle motor or a head stack knocked off its ramp — both are recoverable failure classes in a cleanroom, where the platters are transplanted onto healthy donor mechanics.
Can I open the case myself to look inside?
We would strongly advise against it. The casing is laser-welded and helium-sealed, and cutting it open outside a controlled environment risks contaminating the platters with dust or debris — turning a recoverable fault into an unrecoverable one.
Does losing the helium seal mean the data is gone?
Not by itself — but it removes any safety margin. If the seal has already been broken, tell us exactly what was done before you sent it; the sooner the drive is stabilised in a proper cleanroom, the better the outcome.
